The German Transpersonal Association (GTA) (Deutsche Transpersonale Gesellschaft, DTG) was founded in 1985 as a registered non-profit organization. Its membership consists of individuals and institutes active or interested in the field of the transpersonal. The purpose of the society is the promotion and public representation of transpersonal approaches in science and research.
The GTA is a member of international associations such as the European Transpersonal Association (EUROTAS), the International Transpersonal Association (ITA) and the European Transpersonal Psychology Association (ETPA).
The concept of the transpersonal refers to those areas and aspects of the world and of man which make their multidimensionality and interconnectedness accessible and understandable. An important part of this endeavor is the inclusion of transrational aspects and modes of cognition and the bridging between Western and Eastern traditions of science. The multiplicity of relevant approaches in the field produces a broad variety of terminologies, descriptions, models, systems and schools. The spectrum of transpersonal topics promoted and presented by the German Transpersonal Society therefore is widely spread and encompasses, among other issues, lectures on meditation research, on the results of neurobiological and physiological investigation of altered states of consciousness and the presentation of different methods of diagnosis and therapy from practical experience.
It is a special concern of the GTA to foster, stimulate and promote an exchange on transpersonal approaches in science and research. In particular, the GTA endeavours to present the results of this work in a well-founded manner to a broader public, and to show its relevance for the different scientific disciplines as well as for individual and societal development. Since 1994, the GTA has been based in Berlin.
Since January 2000, the board of directors of the GTA has consisted of the following three members with equal rights:
· Marco Bischof, independent scholar and science writer
· Dr.Martina Bley, behavioral scientist
· Jutta Gruber, journalist / writer
The scientific and cultural advisory board of the association consists of
· Prof. Dr. Hinderk Emrich
· Heiko Lassek
· Prof. Dr. Peter Meyer-Dohm
· Prof. Dr. Wilfried Seifert
The following haven been elected as honorary presidents:
· Dr. Maria Hippius -Gräfin Dürckheim
· Dr. Stanislav Grof
· Dr. Elizabeth Philipov
The two boards cooperate with the secretariat and the membership in order to realize the aforementioned goals of the GTA.
In view of the important networking aspect of the goals of the society, the GTA cooperates with projects of related interest and with universities, private institutes and individual therapists. Another aim of the GTA is to establish links between scientists of different disciplines (e.g. medicine, psychology, psychiatry, biology, neurobiology, sociology, physics, economy) and practitioners such as naturopathic doctors, healers, and physicians.
By organizing conferences, monthly meetings ("Berlin Integral Discourse", formerly "Berlin Transpersonal Morning Pint"), panel discussions and seminars with selected speakers, the German Transpersonal Association offers forums open to all where information on transpersonal research approaches in the most varied fields is made available.
Since 1996, the GTA has also been publishing the journal "Transpersonal Perspectives", edited by Jutta Gruber and Peter Meyer-Dohm. In each issue, articles by different authors are centered on a particular subject; institutes and individuals present themselves and their work, and relevant topical events are announced.
Since 1998, the German Transpersonal Association has been hosting the Internet websitewww.transpersonal.de. On this website, the journal Transpersonal Perspectives is additionally presented in electronic form as an online magazine.
The GTA also acts as an agency for those interested in the correspondence course of the California-based Institute of Transpersonal Pychology in Palo Alto, where basic courses as well as officially (U.S.) recognized M.A. degrees in Transpersonal Psychology can be taken.
In the Berlin office of the GTA, live networking is taking place on a daily basis. A few examples: Students are referred to professors, individuals are put in touch with others involved in similar work processes or working on related subjects. We call upon all our resources to connect and bring into contact specific projects and relevant approaches that may enrich and complement each other.
Membership in the GTA represents a commitment to transpersonal research and can offer a home to people interested in the dissemination and integration of transpersonal topics. Collaboration, any degree of commitment, or just simple participation is possible in many ways and at many levels of financial involvement.
