The European Transpersonal Association

EUROTAS today and in the future
- a discussion note for the Sinaia Conference 28 May -1 June 2003

EUROTAS today

EUROTAS is a channel of communication for national transpersonal associations and a network for like-minded individuals in Europe. We have 17 member associations from 15 different European countries. There are about 100 individuals across Europe interested in spiritual and hence transpersonal matters who connect with one another partly through EUROTAS.  Our regular newsletter is distributed to them and also appears on our developing website www. eurotas. org where we publish news, views and articles. There are also links to other European transpersonal initiatives and associations. There are a growing number of enquiries from across the world about transpersonal affairs in Europe.

Each year our annual delegate conference meets in a member country for what is becoming a mini-conference around relevant themes and an opportunity for the 50 or so participants to network. We have built  meetings round Expert Committees, working on such subjects as "The training of European transpersonal therapists", " The transpersonal vision in health, education and management", " Transpersonal Research, "Art and Creativity" and " Consciousness and Society. "  Our meetings are opportunities to connect and work with individuals of many European nationalities, all of whom have the common bond of an interest in the transpersonal.  Meetings are stimulating, fun and full of new European and transpersonal insights. There is enthusiasm for follow up work on relevant topics expressed when we meet each year. There is less enthusiasm for actually doing the work!

Many of our members are professional transpersonal therapists, but many also are individuals from other professions, seeking knowledge and wishing to meet others as they follow their path.

EUR0TAS was established 18 years ago with the purpose of providing a European context to bring together different disciplines and viewpoints - among them sciences, spirituality, philosophies and art - to promote a holistic transformation of the human being in body, soul and spirit. Our aim also is to encourage a transpersonal perspective in education, the economy, ecology, politics and other areas of human life and endeavour.

As a growing, living, facilitating organization, EUROTAS continues to develop, often standing, along with its member associations as an oasis of peace in a pressurised and hectic world. Free from ethnic, religious or financial constraints, it encourages creativity, love and art and the responsibility of individuals to follow their own paths in the company of like-minded people.

There is a constitution and bylaws, a modest administration and a small fee which member associations contribute to help oil the wheels and support the travel expenses of some who would otherwise not be able to meet each year. But what we do is more important than what we are. EUROTAS has no financial reserves and lives from one year to another thanks to voluntary support for its activities and generous donations by a few individuals and organizations. The annual subscription is 140 Euros ( Euros 150 proposed)  a year. Not all Associations are able to pay this so the revenue from associations is about 1500 Euros which goes to support the annual conference and in particular to help with the accommodation and travel costs of those from low wage companies.

EUROTAS Tomorrow

The Options:

  1. Eurotas could continue along its present lines improving the website as a key and inexpensive communications channel, perhaps developing the annual conferences,  producing a newsletter three or four times a year and improving the efficiency of its network of like minded people across Europe and the wider world. It is an informal organization which has worked through the support of a small number of people. It does not currently have the funds to be formally established as a charity or a not-for profit organization.

  2. Eurotas could develop expert committees of like minded professionals who will carry out research projects, develop new approaches to the transpersonal both in fields such as psychotherapy and  psychology and also in the wider world where an ethics/values/spiritual dimension is developing the educational, health, management and social areas. It could become a much more important player in the European spiritual and transpersonal arena.

The Issues.

  1. To continue as it has developed during the past 5 years, EUROTAS will need to continue to identify a few dedicated people who can make things happen in a delegated, decentralized, supportive and diplomatic way.

  2. To develop from this delicate but potentially quite firm and established base, EUROTAS will need to spend time on process, procedures and meetings, on fund raising and on motivating a new group of dedicated people across Europe.

What sort of things it might do in the future will depend in part on the energy of those involved and their commitment to the gearing up of energy, financial and human resources to make this happen.
