Centre for Transpersonal Psychology

The Transpersonal movement, born in the USA, found its first British home in the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology, founded by Barbara Somers and Ian Gordon-Brown in 1973 in London. Starting its work with a series of workshops exploring Transpersonal themes, it gradually evolved and expanded into the field of training. Today, 27 years later, the Centre remains at the very heart of Transpersonal activities in Great Britain. It is an Accrediting Organisation within the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), offering a core training in two stages.

Stage One, a one-year course, is open to everyone who wishes to study Transpersonal subjects in greater depth. Stage Two, a professional preparation for the practice of Transpersonal psychotherapy, is a two-year course of taught modules, leading to self-directed studies until completion.

Although right from the start the Centre's work has been focused on psychology, its impact reaches far beyond that area. Out of its 700 members, 61 are accredited psychotherapists. Others come from the worlds of law, architecture, banking, accountancy, music, art and literature, as well as from the fields of both allopathic and complementary medicine. This wide range of professions shows the universal lure and applicability of the Transpersonal approach in everyday life.
